ORGANISATION DESCRIPTION

The MARe Foundation operates the MARe/Museum of Recent Art in Bucharest, which opened in 2018 as the first private art museum in Romania in the last hundred years. The foundation's mission focuses on exhibiting, promoting, and disseminating contemporary art from the past 60 years. The museum, housed in a unique building designed by Lebanese architect Youssef Thome, is a fine example of architecture in Northern Bucharest. Its collection primarily features significant pieces of Romanian contemporary art from the 1960s to the present, mapping the evolution of contemporary art during and after Communism. Additionally, the collection includes 200 pieces of international contemporary art, representing key movements in contemporary art.

Over its six years of existence, MARe has organized notable exhibitions, including solo shows of international artists like Jeff Wall, Martin Creed, and Thomas Ruff, group shows on important themes in Romanian art and society, a Picasso exhibition comparing Picasso with Romanian artists, and significant displays of the Romanian collection. These efforts have fostered collaborations with cultural institutes in Bucharest, international and local museums and galleries, private collections, companies interested in art investment, and artists.

MARe's mission also embraces interdisciplinarity through events related to music, experimental sound, contemporary dance and performance, conferences, and art talks. The foundation is dedicated to education, organizing art workshops for children led by specialized trainers, and offering guided tours by museum staff, invited curators, and artists from the collection.

In the past, MARe has applied for funding for various cultural projects and has extensive experience in this area. The foundation's future aims include:

  1. Develop more the museum audience in Romania
  2. Develop the notion of the contemporary museum
  3. Conceive art exhibitions
  4. Conceive catalogues for contemporary art
  5. Organize art workshops for children and adults
  6. Organize art courses for children and adults
  7. Organize cultural events on a wide range of disciplines
  8. Organize training workshops for museum specialists and curators
  9. Organize conferences and art talks on relevant themes for contemporary art and culture
  10. Establish and grow connections with other museums and institutions throughout Europe in order to foster exchange and relevant networking that would create a context for solid collaborations
