PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The multidisciplinary research team at the Center for Cultural Policy Research Cupore engages in a wide range of cooperation projects, covering themes such as art and artists, structures and economy, regions and municipalities, as well as production, events, and participation. Cross-cutting themes include digitalization, sustainability, equality, diversity, civil society, and impact.

The Structures and Economy theme focuses on state, municipal, and private cultural funding, including foundations and companies, as well as the role of the copyright system in the cultural and creative industries. Cupore’s research helps consolidate fragmented funding information and develop methodologies for monitoring cultural funding.

The Art and Artists theme examines the working conditions, livelihoods, and structures of various art fields, highlighting the specific characteristics of artistic work and artists' perspectives on cultural policy. Comparative studies with other Nordic countries provide insights into artist policies and societal frameworks for artistic activities.

The Regions and Municipalities theme analyzes regional and local cultural policies, cultural activities, and service provisions in Finnish municipalities. Research highlights disparities, particularly in rural areas where cultural services are more limited. Comparative studies with Nordic countries provide models for monitoring and evaluating municipal cultural activities.

The Productions, Events, and Participation theme explores the resources, impacts, and long-term effectiveness of cultural productions and events, with a special focus on participation and inclusion. Current projects, such as the Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture Monitoring and Evaluation Project, assess the cultural and social impacts of major cultural initiatives. Research in this area also covers art and media education, children's and youth culture, and the accessibility and inclusivity of cultural services.

Cupore remains committed to developing research projects that explore cultural participation, accessibility, ethics, diversity, and inclusion in the arts and cultural sector.
